February is National Heart Month!

When you think of February you might picture Valentines, the color red, and of course, hearts! But, it’s also time to think about your actual heart as well! Every year, 1 in 4 deaths is attributed to heart disease, so it’s easy to see why it’s so important to be aware of ways to make your heart healthy.  It’s also very important that we, as parents do everything we can to make sure that our kids are heart healthy! Here’s a few tips to keep your family healthy and happy…

  1. Know your risk factors and be willing to talk about them.  This is very important in future planning so that everyone in the family knows what to say to their doctor and risk factors that can be avoided.
  2. Eat lots of whole grains, Omega-3’s (fatty fish, avocado, nuts), veggies and fruits.  This is kind of a no-brainer, but always worth mentioning!
  3. Get checked! Talking to your doctor, getting a yearly physical, and keeping tabs on your family is key.
  4. Get active early! Getting your kids into a program like Healthy Kids Running Series will keep them moving and motivated to #getupandgo!
