Skip the afternoon slump with a better lunch!

Find that you hit a slump in the afternoon and feel like your energy is totally gone? Or do you get hangry (hunger + angry) around 3:00 pm and just don’t know how you’ll make it to dinnertime? Well, the answer could be in your lunchbox! Here are some ideas of ways to up your lunch game and put together combinations that will help you make it through the day!

  1. Melons: spring and summer are the perfect season to find melons on the cheap! Cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelons are bursting with flavor and great for hydration as well! Melons are about 90% water weight, so not only do they taste awesome, but they will also make you feel full without a bunch of calories.
  2. Brown Rice: Brown rice, especially whole grain, is a great source of energy in the form of stored carbohydrates and magnesium.  Magnesium is one of the building blocks of energy that the body can absorb.  Brown rice is also very versatile and tastes great hot or cold.
  3. Spinach: This iron and calcium rich leafy green is again, very versatile, and can be eaten hot or cold.  Try it on a sandwich or wrap instead of lettuce.  Spinach salads with strawberries and grilled chicken are another great way to get the benefits of maximum iron and calcium absorption.
  4. Bananas: Bananas are a fool proof fast food.  They are packed with potassium, which helps heal muscles, so they are a great after-workout food, they come in their own biodegradable wrapper, and they contain high levels of fiber and natural fruit sugars.

Happy Lunching!
